Wilhelmina
was born in 1880, daughter of King Wilhelm III and his wife
Emma. By
the time she turned four years old, all of the king's male
heirs had died leaving Wilhelmina to succeed him. She was
groomed for her future tasks by her mother, while growing
up at 'Het Loo' palace. Queen Regent Emma supervised her daughter's
education, which included law, physics and military sciences.
Wilhelmina
inherited the title of queen upon her father's death in 1890,
however she could not ascend to the throne until the age of
18. Just three years after her inauguration she married the
German prince Hendrick van Mecklenberg. After nine years of
marriage and several miscarriages, Wilhelmina at last gave
birth to her only heir, a daughter, Juliana.
Throughout her reign as queen, Wilhelmina led the Netherlands
through war, regained peace and brought the country to unprecedented
heights of modernization. At the age of sixty-eight the queen
became ill and abdicated in favor of her daughter Juliana.
She spent her remaining fourteen years focused on religious
affairs, prior to her death in 1962.
The
Netherland 10 Guilder will forever commend Wilhelmina's half
century as queen. In honor of her achievements the Netherlands
minted these beautiful gold coins from 1911-1917 & 1925-1933.
